As a plastic surgeon who performs lip lift procedures almost daily in my clinic, I often meet patients who are frustrated with their upper lip appearance. Many have tried lip fillers but haven't achieved the look they desire. Today, I want to share my expertise about lip lift surgery - a procedure I'm particularly passionate about because of the natural, beautiful results it can achieve for the right candidates.
Let's Clear Up a Common Misunderstanding About Lip Lifts
One of the first things I explain to my patients is that a lip lift is completely different from lip fillers. While both procedures enhance lip aesthetics, they work in fundamentally different ways. I often see patients who've had multiple lip filler treatments but still aren't satisfied with their results. Why? Because fillers can only add volume, while many patients actually need a change in lip position - and that's exactly what a lip lift achieves.
Understanding What a Lip Lift Really Does
When I perform a lip lift, I'm not just adding volume - I'm actually repositioning your upper lip to create a more youthful, attractive appearance. Think of it like adjusting a curtain - we're shortening the space between your nose and upper lip (what we call the philtrum) and gently turning your upper lip outward to show more of its natural red color. This creates a completely different effect than simply plumping up the lips with filler.
Are You a Good Candidate for a Lip Lift?
One of the things I love most about this procedure is how it can benefit people of all ages. While many assume lip lifts are only for older patients, I regularly perform this surgery on younger patients too. Why? Because a long philtrum isn't just about aging - it can be genetic too! I've had wonderful results with patients in their early 20s who were born with naturally long upper lips, as well as middle-aged patients experiencing age-related changes.
However - and this is really important to me - I won't recommend a lip lift unless I'm confident it will give you significant improvement. If your philtrum length is already ideal, or if I don't think the benefits would outweigh having a small scar, I'll be honest with you about that.
What Happens During the Procedure?
One of the best things about lip lift surgery is that I can perform it right here in my clinic under local anesthesia. (Read my blog post about local anesthesia) It's a relatively quick procedure - usually taking about 30-45 minutes - and you'll be awake but completely comfortable throughout. I take great care with my incision placement, hiding it in the natural crease beneath your nose where it will be as inconspicuous as possible.
Let's Talk About Scarring - Because I Know You're Wondering
I always have an honest conversation with my patients about scarring. Yes, there will be a permanent scar - and anyone who tells you otherwise isn't being truthful. However, here's the good news: this area typically heals beautifully. The scar is placed in a natural crease where shadows naturally fall, making it much less noticeable once fully healed.
How I Help You Get the Best Possible Results
After surgery, I provide my patients with a scar management plan. I recommend using medical-grade silicone gel for 6 months post-surgery, and for patients who want to take extra steps for optimal results, we can also do CO2 laser treatments during the healing period. I've seen remarkable improvements in scar appearance with this combined approach.
What to Expect During Recovery
Recovery is typically straightforward, but I'll be with you every step of the way. You'll have some swelling and need to be gentle with your lip area for a few weeks, but most of my patients find the recovery quite manageable. I provide detailed aftercare instructions and am always available to address any concerns during your healing process.
The Results That Make Me Love This Procedure
What makes me particularly passionate about lip lifts is seeing how happy my patients are with their results. When done on the right candidate, a lip lift can:
Create a more youthful, attractive lip position
Show more of your upper teeth when you smile
Better balance your upper and lower lips
Give you a prettier resting expression
Reduce or eliminate your need for regular lip fillers
My Approach to Lip Lift Surgery
After performing numerous lip lifts, I've developed a deep understanding of what creates the most natural-looking results. I also re-construct the philtral coloumns. I take time with each patient to understand their goals and carefully evaluate their facial proportions. This isn't a one-size-fits-all procedure - it's about creating harmony with your unique facial features.
Is a Lip Lift Right for You?
If you're considering a lip lift, I encourage you to come in for a consultation (or a video call). During our meeting, I'll:
Evaluate your lip and facial proportions
Listen to your goals and concerns
Show you before and after photos of similar cases
Give you my professional opinion
Answer all your questions
I pride myself on being straightforward with my patients. If I don't think a lip lift is your best option, I'll tell you that and suggest alternatives. My goal isn't just to perform surgeries - it's to help you achieve the best possible results for your situation.
