The Truth About Nerve Complications After a Facelift
It's true that nerve complications, though uncommon, can be a significant concern for patients considering a facelift. While temporary muscle asymmetries are relatively common and often resolve on their own, actual nerve injury is a more serious matter. Let's clarify the different types of nerve issues that can arise:
Sensory Nerve Injury: The most common nerve affected during a face and neck lift is the great auricular nerve. This nerve is responsible for providing sensation to your earlobe. Injury to this nerve can result in numbness or altered sensation in the earlobe. Fortunately, in most cases, the sensation returns over time. However, in very rare instances, the sensory loss can be permanent.
Motor Nerve Injury: These are more serious than sensory nerve injuries. Motor nerve injuries can lead to facial palsy, or facial paralysis, which affects muscle movement. This can manifest as weakness or difficulty controlling facial expressions.
Deep Plane Facelift: Is it Riskier for Nerves?
A common misconception is that the deep plane facelift technique carries a higher risk of nerve injury compared to more superficial facelift methods. However, I believe, in my experience, the opposite is true. The deep plane facelift allows for a more comprehensive and natural-looking rejuvenation with a safer style by releasing and repositioning deeper facial tissues.
Direct Visualization: In my hands, the deep plane approach offers a significant advantage: direct visualization of the facial nerves. When the nerves are clearly visible during surgery, it becomes easier to protect them. This meticulous approach minimizes the risk of accidental damage.
Nerve Stimulation Technology: I further enhance nerve safety by using a nerve stimulating device. This device helps to map the motor nerves in the face, allowing for precise identification and avoidance during the surgical procedure.

Neuropraxia and Recovery After Deep Plane Facelift
It's important to note that some degree of neuropraxia (temporary nerve dysfunction) is possible after a deep plane face and neck lift. This can occur due to the tension placed on the nerves during the procedure.
Full Recovery: The good news is that neuropraxia is typically temporary. In most cases, full recovery of nerve function occurs within approximately one month after surgery. During this time, patients may experience mild weakness or altered sensation, but these symptoms gradually improve as the nerves heal.
